Understanding the Ontario G1 Knowledge Test
General information about the G1 test based on publicly available resources. Always refer to the Official MTO Driver's Handbook and the DriveTest website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
What Is the G1 Test?
The G1 knowledge test is the first step in Ontario's graduated licensing system. It is a written multiple-choice exam administered at DriveTest centres across the province. Passing the G1 test earns you a G1 licence, which allows you to practise driving under specific conditions with a fully licensed driver in the front passenger seat.
Test Format and Structure
According to publicly available information, the G1 test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions divided into two equal sections:
- Section 1 — Traffic Rules (20 questions): Covers Ontario driving laws, right-of-way rules, speed limits, safe driving practices, impaired driving penalties, and the demerit point system.
- Section 2 — Traffic Signs (20 questions): Tests your knowledge of regulatory signs, warning signs, construction zone signs, highway information signs, and pavement markings used on Ontario roads.
You must score at least 16 out of 20 (80%) in each section independently to pass. There is no overall combined score — you must meet the threshold in both sections.
Eligibility and Requirements
To take the G1 test in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old and provide acceptable identification that proves your legal name, date of birth, and signature. You will also need to pass a basic vision screening at the DriveTest centre before writing the knowledge test. Check the DriveTest website for a full list of accepted identification documents.
How to Prepare
The best way to prepare for the G1 test is to thoroughly study the Official MTO Driver's Handbook, which is the authoritative source for all test content. Supplementing your study with practice tests can help reinforce what you've learned. DrivePrep offers free, independently written practice questions based on handbook topics to help you gauge your readiness.

- Don't rush — there is no time limit on the G1 knowledge test.
- If you don't pass, you can retake the test (retake fees apply).
